Abstract

The terms Pharmacy Informatics and Pharmacoinformatics are often used interchangeably in professional literature, yet they represent distinct disciplines with unique goals and methodologies. This presentation and article delve into the definitions to provide a rational distinction between the two.

Key Distinctions:

  • Pharmacy Informatics is focused on the application of information technology to drive pharmacy practice. It is centered on the medication use process (prescribing, verifying, dispensing, administering, and monitoring) to enhance patient safety and clinical outcomes within healthcare systems.
  • Pharmacoinformatics is focused on the use of computational power to enhance the throughput of drug discovery. It leverages data science, bioinformatics, and chemoinformatics to accelerate the development of new pharmaceutical agents.

While there is currently limited overlap between the daily practice of a pharmacy informaticist and the science of pharmacoinformatics, the future of Precision Medicine—where clinical data and computational models converge to design patient-specific therapies—represents the ultimate synergy of these two fields.
